Why to protest? Protesting is one of the most American things a citizen can do, other than vote!

This nation was founded by PROTESTING!

Protesting played a crucial role in turning the American colonies’ anger at British rule into an organized movement for independence, and the Boston Tea Party is one of the clearest examples of how direct action pushed events toward the founding of the United States. Protests like this helped convince many colonists that they needed a new kind of government based on representation and consent, not distant imperial control.

Background: Why Colonists Protested

After the French and Indian War, Britain tried to raise revenue by taxing the colonies and tightening control over trade, even though colonists had no representatives in Parliament. This sparked the idea of “no taxation without representation,” a belief that legitimate government needed the consent of the governed, which later became a core principle of the new nation. British measures such as the Stamp Act, Townshend Acts, and Tea Act were seen not just as economic burdens but as threats to colonial self-government, pushing more people into protest instead of quiet compliance.

The Boston Tea Party Itself

The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773, when a group of colonists, many associated with the Sons of Liberty, boarded ships in Boston Harbor and dumped hundreds of chests of British East India Company tea into the water. They were protesting the Tea Act, which preserved a tax on tea and granted the East India Company a special monopoly, symbolizing Parliament’s right to tax and regulate the colonies without their consent.

How It Escalated Conflict

Britain responded to the Boston Tea Party with the Coercive or “Intolerable” Acts, which among other things closed Boston’s port and sharply curtailed local self-government in Massachusetts. These punitive laws convinced many colonists that British authorities intended to rule by force rather than partnership, leading colonial leaders to organize the First Continental Congress in 1774 to coordinate resistance across the colonies.

From Protest to Revolution

The cycle of protest and repression after the Tea Party helped unify separate colonies into a common cause against perceived tyranny. Within two years of the Tea Party, open fighting broke out at Lexington and Concord in 1775, and by 1776 the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, framing the struggle in terms of natural rights, popular sovereignty, and the right of the people to alter or abolish an abusive government.

Lasting Impact on American Ideals

The Boston Tea Party became a powerful symbol that ordinary people could challenge unjust authority, not just by petitions but by direct action, when other methods failed. This legacy helped embed protest, civil disobedience, and public assembly as accepted—and often celebrated—tools in American political life, shaping not only the Revolution but later movements for abolition, labor rights, and civil rights that continued to redefine the nation’s promises of liberty and equality.

In this era of American history, see can clearly see Fascism and Nazistic rule and terrorism in place these days. It is easy to compare America today to the German era of 1928 to 1934.

This is why all good Americans should proudly declare that they are AntiFa, the American citizenry, who are against the politices of Trump and the terrorism of ICE and MAGA.

As we are about to enter Trump’s second year of his second term, more Americans daily are realizing they cannot handle the burdens of Trump’s tariffs, the rising costs of groceries, healthcare, cars, electronics, toys, and so many other consumer items. MAGA is finally starting to understand that Trump’s tariffs are a tax against them, since the consumers will usually always pay the tariff tax.

There are several things you can do, if you want to fight back however you can. Call your Congress Rep and your two Senators monthly to voice your opinion, write letters to the editors of newspapers and publications. Talk to your friends, neighbors about the situations of today and listen to what they think about it.

Find your local Progressive groups, join them, and attend their meetings. Groups like Indivisible, Democratic Socialists of America, Our Revolution, NAACP, People’s Action, and other like groups. And importantly, attend the local No Kings events when they happen!
